The WCED has announced that approximately 30,000 spaces are still available for Grades 1 and 8 for the 2025 academic year.
And on top of that, Thousands of learners have been accepted into more than one school. This means there will be more openings at some schools in the coming weeks and months as families finalise their decisions of choosing their favourite option.
How to Apply Online at WCED?
Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to apply online at the Western Cape Education Department (WCED):

Go to WCED Portal
All On-time applications for Grade 1 & 8 are submitted through the WCED portal. For Late applications on all Grades and transfers, you visit an Education District office or the school of your choice. Schools can capture your application on a different platform made specially for schools.
Register as a Parent/Guardian
While you are on the WCED portal, Select Admissions and Click (Admission | Grade 1 & 8).
Click on Parent Register.
-Read and accept the terms and conditions by clicking Yes and Continue.
-Complete the Parent Register Check and click Save
Enter your ID number and create a password.
Answer security questions and click Register.
Confirm registration by entering the OTP that appears in green on the screen.
Click Verify.
Save your contact details (email and cellphone number).
Add your contact details.
Click Save and return, then click OK to confirm the notification.
Learner Application
Step 2: Learner Application
Log in as a parent/guardian with your ID number and password.
Click on Parent Login.
Select Learner Application and the Grade for your child.
Answer questions regarding previous schooling in the Western Cape.
Capture a new application if needed.
Complete the Learner Profile and Required Grade sections.
Save and move to the next step.
Choose the sport and cultural programs the learner is involved in and any leadership roles.
Enter music participation details and click Save and Next.
Select schools based on preference.
Search by school name, alphabet, or town & suburb.
Add schools and confirm by clicking Save.
Continue adding up to 10 schools per learner application.
Rearrange the order of preference if needed by using the yellow block and arrows.
Upload certified documents before the application deadline.
Confirm submission by clicking Submit application.
Receive an SMS confirmation of the submission.
Use the learner’s CEMIS number as a reference number for inquiries.
