World Literacy Day: Addressing the Learning Crisis and the Thrive by Five Index

World Literacy Day, celebrated annually, is a stark reminder of the crucial role literacy plays in a child’s development and future success. Here in the UK, we often take for granted the reading skills our children acquire. However, a recent tweet from Siviwe Gwarube, a prominent figure in South African education, highlights a concerning reality: a significant number of South African children struggle with basic literacy. This prompted us at SchoolClick to take a closer look at how South Africa’s Department of Basic Education is tackling this challenge.

The tweet, which you can view here: https://x.com/Siviwe_G/status/1964942823028908230, reveals that “statistically 8 out of 10 children cannot read and calculate confidently for meaning.” This is a sobering statistic and underscores the urgency of addressing literacy gaps early on. Gwarube emphasises the Department’s “intense focus on the foundations of learning,” rightly pointing out that progress in other areas is limited if learners can’t comprehend what they read.

One of the key initiatives mentioned is the launch of the “Thrive by Five Index.” This benchmark is designed to assess children’s cognitive development as they enter Grade R (Reception Year). It’s a proactive approach aimed at identifying potential learning difficulties early and providing targeted support. Early intervention is key to ensuring that children get off to the best possible start in their education.

The Thrive by Five Index, and the focus on foundational learning in South Africa, provides food for thought for educators globally, including those of us here in the UK. Are we doing enough to ensure every child develops strong literacy skills from the very beginning? South Africa’s commitment to addressing this challenge is commendable, and their experiences may offer valuable lessons for other nations grappling with similar issues.
