Unlocking Voices: Oral History as a Stage for Youth and Heritage

The South African Department of Basic Education (DBE) is championing a fantastic initiative focused on oral history! SchoolClick is always keen to highlight projects that empower young people and connect them with their heritage. This particular DBE initiative sounds like a brilliant way to do just that.

According to a recent tweet from the DBE (check it out here: https://x.com/DBE_SA/status/1959191333546938612), Mr Likho Bottoman, Director at the Social Cohesion Directorate of the DBE, emphasised the importance of oral history as a platform for young people to showcase their talents and preserve their heritage. He noted that oral history provides an excellent opportunity for students to engage with their past and develop valuable communication skills.

We think this is a wonderful way to bring history to life! Instead of just reading about the past in textbooks, students can actively participate in preserving it by interviewing elders, collecting stories, and sharing them with their communities. This fosters a deeper understanding of their roots and strengthens community bonds.

It’s initiatives like these that truly make a difference in education. At SchoolClick, we’re all about sharing positive stories from schools across the globe. The DBE’s focus on oral history is a fantastic example of innovative and engaging learning.
