For most students in South Africa who want to pursue higher education after getting their Matric results 2024, NSFAS will be an answer. Tuition fees, accommodation, and all living expenses that are required by any suitable student are covered. The following guide is how to set-up a strong NSFAS application 2025 that stands a good chance of approval.

But, “Kahle-kahle” Who Qualifies for NSFAS?

Before applying, ensure you meet the success criteria and let us check the list:

  • You must be a valid South African citizen.
  • Your parents’ income combined, must not be more than R350,000 per year.
  • You must have applied and been accepted (with confirmation letter of acceptance) at a public University or TVET college.
  • Social grant (e.g disability grant, SRD or other) beneficiaries automatically qualify.
  • Students who are registering for the first time or continuing their studies but have a strong academic record.

NSFAS application 2025 list of documents

  • Copy of your smart Identity Document (certified).
  • Copy of parent/s or guardian/ spouse ID Document.
  • Payslip or Proof of income if any or both parents work.
  • NSFAS Declaration Form completed by your school Principal or Social Worker.
  • If you are under 18 years, submit the Orphan/Vulnerable Child Declaration Form completed by a Social Worker.
  • A NSFAS Consent form completed by the applicant and/or parent/s, guardian or spouse. (SASSA recipients are not require to submit a consent form).
  • Proof of guardianship issued by the Court if you have a legal guardian. Those whose guardianship are not appointed by the court, NSFAS declaration form is required.
  • Disability Annexure form: If you are a person with disability, you are required to download a Disability Annexure form that must be filled and certified by a registered medical professional.
  • Marriage Certificate if you are married.
  • Provisional Acceptance confirmation letter from the institution. You are however allowed to continue to apply if you have not received the Acceptance letter.
  • Affidavits is not allowed for NSFAS application 2025: NSFAS does not accept affidavits as supporting documents.

NSFAS application 2025 steps-by-step

Create a myNSFAS Account

Visit the NSFAS website: www.nsfas.org.za.
Click on the “myNSFAS” tab and create an account.
Provide a valid email address and cellphone number.

All documents must be in Pdf format, not Jpeg or Png

Scan all your prepared documents separately, renamed according to form name, and must be in a Pdf document. Jpeg or other format might reduce the quality of your documents and might endup being blurry. Do not take pictures of your document but scan them into a Pdf.

Prepare Your Documents for uploading

Certified copy of your South African ID or birth certificate.
Certified ID copies of parents, guardian, or spouse.
Proof of income (payslip, UIF letter, or affidavit) for all household members.
Your latest academic results (grade 11, Matric grade 12 or any latest set of results)
A Disability Annexure A form (if applicable).
Acceptance letter from the university or TVET college
Matric certificate or statement of results
Proof of residence (tribal letter, ward councillor or account statement)

Click on “Apply” and follow the prompts.

Tips to Ensure a Successful NSFAS application 2025

  1. Apply Early: NSFAS applications usually open around September and close in January. Applying early reduces the risk of technical issues or missed deadlines.
  2. Ensure Document Accuracy
    • Double-check that all documents are certified and up to date.
    • Avoid submitting blurred or incomplete copies.
  3. Provide Honest Information Any false or misleading information can result in disqualification or legal consequences.
  4. Seek Assistance if Needed If you encounter issues, visit your nearest NYDA (National Youth Development Agency) office or consult your institution’s financial aid office.
