The 2024 matric results have been released, revealing remarkable trends in provincial performance across South Africa. Once again, the Free State leads the pack, achieving an impressive 91% pass rate—a continued trajectory of excellence from 2023’s 89.03%.

KwaZulu-Natal has made significant strides, reaching 89.5%, a major leap from 86.36% in 2023, reflecting effective interventions to uplift learner outcomes in the province. Similarly, Gauteng continues to perform strongly with an 88.4% pass rate, demonstrating consistency in its education system.

Among provinces showing noteworthy improvements are the Eastern Cape and Limpopo, both achieving 85%, compared to their respective 2023 figures of 81.42% and 79.54%. These gains highlight the impact of targeted strategies in underperforming areas.

The Northern Cape also experienced remarkable progress, improving from 75.84% in 2023 to 84.2%. Western Cape, while traditionally strong, has shown a modest increase, moving from 81.54% to 86.6%. Mpumalanga mirrored this upward trend, also reaching 85%.

The North-West province saw one of the most significant improvements, jumping from 81.63% to 87.5%. However, these results still underline challenges in ensuring equity and sustained progress nationwide.

As South Africa celebrates the achievements of its learners and educators, these results underscore the importance of continuous investment in education infrastructure and programs to bridge remaining gaps. With many provinces nearing or surpassing the 85% threshold, the country is on a promising trajectory toward educational excellence.
