Government-Embedded Research: Shaping Education Policy and Interventions

SchoolClick is always keen to see what’s happening in education around the globe, and recently we stumbled upon some interesting work coming out of South Africa. It seems the Department of Basic Education (DBE) is taking a proactive approach to understanding how research can actually make a difference in schools. That’s something we think is worth highlighting!

The DBE recently shared some insights from a case study examining how government-backed education research can impact the roll-out of big educational programmes and policies. Carien Vorster, a co-author of the research report, explained that the study aims to provide a more profound understanding of this important connection.

It’s all about ensuring that the research being done actually informs what happens in classrooms and benefits students. Think of it as bridging the gap between theory and practice, making sure that new policies and initiatives are based on solid evidence and are more likely to succeed.

This sort of evidence-based approach is something we’d love to see more of here in the UK. Knowing that decisions are being made with a clear understanding of what works – and what doesn’t – gives everyone more confidence in the education system.
