A Dream Realized: Ms. Nontsikelelo Biko Mashalaba Shares the Vision Behind the Steve Biko Centre
South African learners recently had a truly special experience, connecting with the legacy of a pivotal figure in their nation’s history. The Department of Basic Education (DBE) organised an event where students had the honour of hearing from Ms Nontsikelelo Biko Mashalaba, the wife of the late, great Steve Biko. It’s fantastic to see such initiatives bringing history to life for young people.
Ms Mashalaba shared the inspiring story of how the Steve Biko Centre came to be. This wasn’t just a government project; it stemmed from a deeply personal family dream. The Biko family envisioned a space where communities could unite, learn from each other, and work together to protect and preserve their heritage. Imagine being a student and hearing that story firsthand!
The DBE’s commitment to providing enriching learning experiences is evident. Exposing children to such powerful narratives fosters a deeper understanding of their history and encourages them to become active, engaged citizens.
