New Sports Facility in Springs: A Win for Education, Sport, and Community
It’s fantastic news coming out of South Africa as the Department of Basic Education (DBE) demonstrates the power of collaboration and investment in young people. A brand new multipurpose sports facility has been unveiled at Phulong Secondary School in Springs, thanks to a partnership between the DBE, the Premier Soccer League (PSL), Nedbank, and Kaizer Chiefs.
The handover ceremony was a celebration of the transformative potential of both education and sport. Jessica Motaung, Marketing & Commercial Director at Kaizer Chiefs, emphasised that football, and sport in general, is about so much more than just winning trophies. It’s about creating opportunities, building brighter futures, and leaving a positive legacy for future generations. She urged the school and the local community to take ownership of the facility and use it to fuel their ambitions.
Matome Chiloane, Gauteng’s MEC for Education, Sport, Arts & Culture, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of providing learners across the province with access to high-quality sporting facilities. He called upon the community to take pride in the new centre and protect it for years to come.
Deputy Minister of Basic Education, Dr Reginah Mhaule, praised Kaizer Chiefs and all the partners involved for prioritising education as a key area for investment. She stressed that investing in schools is an investment in the future of South Africa, reminding the students that the facility belongs to them, their parents, and the entire community. It’s a resource to be used with pride and care.
The overall message was clear: sport and education are powerful tools for nation-building. You can see the original announcement and some photos from the event here: https://x.com/DBE_SA/status/1963245485197611297
This project is a shining example of how partnerships between government, sporting organisations, and the business sector can make a real difference in the lives of young people. It’s a project that other countries, including the UK, could definitely learn from! For more stories about schools making a difference, check out SchoolClick news.
