Capturing Knowledge: How the DBE Aims to Codify Expertise for Better Education

Here at SchoolClick, we’re always interested in innovative approaches to education from around the globe. Recently, the South Africa Department of Basic Education (DBE) has been focusing on an initiative to capture and share valuable institutional knowledge. This is a topic that resonates with many schools facing teacher turnover and the potential loss of experience.

According to a recent tweet from the DBE (see here), their primary aim is to “codify and distill institutional knowledge, much of which often resides within individuals.” Dr Nompumelelo Nyathi-Mohohlwane shared that the DBE documented more than 20… (the tweet cuts off there, leaving us wanting more!).

The idea of formally documenting best practices, successful teaching strategies, and even the ‘unwritten rules’ of a school is a brilliant one. It ensures that this knowledge isn’t lost when experienced teachers retire or move on. Imagine the benefits of having a central repository of information readily available for new teachers or even seasoned educators looking for fresh inspiration.

This initiative highlights a crucial aspect of school improvement: knowledge sharing. By systematically capturing and distributing expertise, schools can create a stronger, more resilient learning environment for both staff and students.

We’re keen to see the full details of the DBE’s project and how other schools worldwide might learn from their experiences. It’s certainly a thought-provoking approach to safeguarding and enhancing the quality of education. For more school news and updates, be sure to check out SchoolClick’s news section.
