Unearthing History: The Nkosi Albert Luthuli Oral History Programme Inspires a New Generation

South African schools are giving history lessons a fresh twist! The Department of Basic Education’s Nkosi Albert Luthuli Oral History Programme is helping pupils develop crucial skills while learning about their past. This exciting project, already running in primary and secondary schools, is set to expand in 2025 with the introduction of District Awards for younger learners.

The programme aligns with the national curriculum, ensuring that pupils aren’t just memorising dates, but actively engaging with the content. It equips them with vital 21st-century skills like research, critical thinking, and communication, all whilst encouraging them to explore local history and celebrate unsung heroes.

Think interviewing grandparents about their experiences during apartheid, or researching the history of a local landmark. The programme is designed to make history relevant and engaging for all ages.

The new District Awards, focusing on Grades 3 and 6, will specifically aim to strengthen these skills early on. Pupils will be encouraged to present their findings through writing, oral presentations, and even using innovative platforms to share their knowledge.
